Corrections Policy

How errors are reported, checked, and corrected on Tales of Canada.

A history site that will not correct itself is just a monument to its own mistakes. This one corrects in the open.

How to report an error

Use the Contact page and tell us the story, the claim, and the source you believe contradicts it. Reports with a source attached are checked first, because they can be.

What happens next

If the report checks out against the sourcing standard on the How We Source page, the story is corrected, and a short dated note is added at the end of the story saying what changed and why. Material updates are also resubmitted to search indexes the same day, so the corrected version is the one readers find.

If the report raises a genuine historical dispute rather than an error, the story may be updated to present the dispute properly, with each position attributed. That, too, is noted on the page.

What never happens

No story is ever quietly rewritten. The version history of a correction is part of the record, and the record is the whole point of this site.
